MOD-CENTURY GARDEN
Our clients came to us looking for guidance and inspiration on how to upgrade the rear garden. Our instruction was directed towards a complete rear of property transformation that blended and enhanced this original red-brick house. Mod-Century Garden evolved to gestate a private Sydney backyard retreat, a pool and courtyard garden where modern landscaping meets a soft but uplifting modern retro charm. This was planned and unified through Impressions Landscape - Designs concept which included cosmetic upgrades to the property to give it a revitalised new identity. This once dark space needed to shine.
The rear landscape design transforms an awkward compact backyard into a lush, private pool focused garden oasis. It leans into a unique, eclectic original Impressions Landscape - Design Australian mid-century modern garden aesthetic. The owners wanted a practical and beautiful Palms Spring inspired garden; low fuss, inviting and elements symbolic of this style. A curved white painted brick swimming pool forms the centrepiece of the project – designed to sit semi out of ground and nestle into the deepest corner of the rear. It interacts with the planting and establishes a playful elegance typical of the mid-century architecture. The curved forms contrast beautifully with the light stone crazy paving, while the white painted brickwork reflects light and enhances a bright, open and inviting garden ambience. A retreat garden space with a modern native Australian garden spin.
A distinct backyard space that features an overriding white and light soft toned base that was designed to flow directly out from the house seamlessly into an outdoor entertaining area and associated glass fenced pool area, creating an inviting connection between the home and the outdoors. Designed for relaxation, seclusion and time in metamorphosed nature. Organic mounds of Zoysia grass are woven into the paving design, softening the landscape architecture with nestling texture and elements of mounding movement.
A frameless glass pool fence ensures uninterrupted views and connection, creating a seamless association between the rear terrace, the swimming pool, and the surrounding garden.
Planting has been carefully layered and composed to balance structure with lushness. Tall bamboo screens offer natural privacy, while sculptural cacti introduce bold shapes that punctuate the greenery. Broad leaved topicals interact with low-maintenance succulents and native shrubs to ensure year-round greenery and intrigue, Altogether, they create a layered composition that feels uplifting, modern and well themed. Strategic garden lighting transforms the space after dark, with the pool shimmering and plant textures casting soft shadows.
Designed to maximise both style and function, Mod-Century Garden showcases how thoughtful Sydney landscape design can be, a blending of pool and landscape harmonised with inventive planting and acute landscape architecture that amalgamates into one cohesive vision. A carefully considered landscape design and build project that works with complete design rapport.
